What is an IP Address? How Does It Work?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a fundamental numerical identifier assigned to every device connected to a computer network. Just like a physical home mailing address enables postal services to deliver letters to your doorstep, an IP address allows web servers, email providers, and cloud applications to route data packets accurately to your computer, phone, or smart device.
IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (e.g. 192.168.1.1) totaling 4.3 billion IPs. IPv6 expands to 128-bit addresses ensuring limitless device scalability.
Dynamic IPs change periodically whenever your router reboots. Static IPs remain permanent, commonly used for servers and remote access.
Public IP is visible across the global internet. Private IP (192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) is strictly used inside your local Wi-Fi network.
What Information Does Your IP Address Reveal?
When you browse the web, your public IP address communicates with destination servers. This public identifier reveals:
- Internet Service Provider (ISP): The telecommunication provider routing your connection.
- Approximate Geographic Location: Country, state/region, and city central exchange hub.
- Autonomous System Number (ASN): The global routing network identifier managing your IP block.
Important: Public IP lookup tools never reveal your exact home street address or personal identity. Only authorized legal authorities with court warrants can request subscriber identity records from your ISP.
How to Protect and Hide Your IP Address
To prevent ISP tracking, bypass geographic restrictions, and protect yourself against cyber attacks on public Wi-Fi networks, using a verified Virtual Private Network (VPN) is recommended.
